i've just started chapter 3 of trails in the sky sc, so here's some thoughts!

i'm torn on whether to go to crossbell or cold steel after i finish all three sky games. on the one hand i think it would be best to play through the games in release order, and from what i can tell, the crossbell games are very similar to sky in presentation and style. that said, i've read that crossbell should be played after cold steel 1 and 2 so i'm undecided. regardless i intend to pick up at least one of them in the upcoming steam sale, assuming they go on sale. (please go on sale.) it's been really nice to play this series on steamdeck; despite being listed as unsupported on steam, FC and SC have run perfectly and have full controller support.

i'll likely have more free time tomorrow to play (raid unexpectedly got cancelled) so i'm looking forward to more!

Anyone have recipes that use very small amounts of okra? I'm talking two or three okra. My okra plants are producing, but they're still small so I'm only getting a two or three every couple of days.

If you have recipes that use large amounts of okra, I'll take those too, but won't have a chance to try them until about August. Per LSU ag extension the heat puts the okra plants into overdrive and I'll have beaucoup then.

It's time for another episode of America's favorite game show: Rotate! That! Mattress!

Edit: And returning contestant Socchan has done it again! The mattress has been rotated 180°, and the sheets changed at the same time. This time around, Socchan notably chose not to move the dresser at the foot of the bed, seeming to save some extra seconds in the final time and some overall effort. Will Socchan continue this gamble in upcoming appearances? Only time will tell!

Today, as in every episode, Socchan walks away with a mattress that has been slightly rejuvenated and whose lifespan has been extended just a bit longer, as well as the feeling of sleeping on fresh sheets to look forward to.

Join us again in two months for another episode of Rotate That Mattress!

Florally Screwed (in all ways but one)
We interrupt this regularly scheduled kidnapping for an important PSA: when it comes to foraging guidebooks, make sure yours is actually reputable, or else you might end up eating something that could make you sick or kill you — or worse, force your partners to deal with the consequences of you ingesting a dangerous amount of colloquially-named sex pollen.

Excited to be able to write this polycule as an established relationship, instead of in the midst of the lead up to it, haha. Reading this over while editing made me realize that I’d gotten really good at portraying these guys’ relationships with each other at some point. It’s very sweet, the little nods to how close they are.

Anyway, it’s very important to me is no matter how close they are, the kidnappings still have to happen. It’s enrichment for them. They’ll start crawling up the walls without it. There’s a fic I need to write, actually, of them crawling up the walls about it.

Re-reading my own fic to get myself in a good writing headspace, and you know, Sonata may have taken more time/effort/plotting and gets more attention for good reasons, but until I bring you home absolutely slaps. I wrote it in something like six days on an average of five hours of sleep a night, and it still might be the best emotional arc I've ever written.

Final Chapter: Siza'li

The next item in your trunk of wonders is a broken, rose gold earring. It would pass for an earring that those of Ul’dahn descent would wear, though it appears to be missing its jewel in the center of the overall intricate design. Probably why it was discarded to begin with, you surmised, though you wouldn’t have to wait long to see what attachment still had its hold on it.

Chapter 1: Jihe'to

The first item in the trunk of wonders you’ve found is a sunflower brooch. It’s small and missing a few of its petals, but you can’t help but smile at how cute it is. With no time to further speculate on its potential owner, the echo immediately propels you into your first memory.

Your vision opens to the view of a serene sunset overlooking a grassy field. Thanks to the power of the echo, you seem to be looking through the eyes of the vision’s owner, awakening with a small yawn.

until thrusday, this week was somewhat calm, at least calm for what would be an exam week. we jst had our tests on monday which were...ok. i did have to cheat a bit on the math one and i also helped someone who was cheating but we didnt got caught, and the other one was an ethics test. which was mostly easy, as they were questions along the lines of "maria runs away everytime she has to talk to someone, what behavior pattern is this?". and the rest of the week transcurred calmly. i even had time to make a profile pic for my ocs art fight profile!!! here it is :3

that was until the peace was gone on thursday evening, when we got a fatidic email...that the middle/high school cordinator was fired out of the blue. and he wouldnt be working anymore from that thursday. needless to say, i was shocked. my mother was too, and things only got worse when we knew the elemtary coordinator (who, i must clarify, IS MARRIED TO THE MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL COORDINATOR) and 2 high school teahcers (who have been working in the school for ages, and are pretty much ones of the top teachers here. the type you instictively know its influence, and have been hated by every student before graduating yet loved once the students spend 0.00001 seconds at college, and frankly, responsible for much of the schools very appreciated results at the ifecs) were also fired out of the blue that very same day.

needless to say, there was shock and anger everywhre. most parents (including mine) were either angry or concerned, AND OH BOY THE STUDENTS...the class gropuchat was mad as fuck too, and some people were starting to think about protesting or smth, but man everyone was convinced this was the downfall of the school and stuff. i partially agree with it, bc even if those fuckers have been declaring that the school was going to fucking die since the beiginning of the year (bc of frankly, light reasons, such as the change of the entrance hours to 6:45am or the change on the grading system) this is truly fucked up. and weird. bc they were literally fired without fair cause. at least thats what some teachers and a frienc of my mother who works at the school told my mom...which is even weirder. if they were fired bc of some wrongdoing we would've known, specially since im sure a parent would've spoken up about about it and killed the headmistress if they attempted to cover it up, as this has happened before. but here LITERALLY NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING. today 74384789374 students have asked the teachers and all of them have said they dont know anything and is jst a very mysterious mystery...which is even worse tbh. and we still dont know anything lol.

somehow, classes were very normal the first hours of the day. i had my science test (which was hell, as always, BUT, i have the hunch i may have done better today, as i applied A BRAND NEW SOLVING QUESTIONS STRATEGY, but im still nervous lol), until the class after recess, since some middle/high school kids went to protest at the headmistress office, and everyone was like "OMG WHATS HAPPENING!??!?!" for like 15 minutes, until the teachers forced everyone inside lol. and nothing, still, jst the headmistress telling them they were doing what they considered best and shit like that.

im mostly concerned about the kids who are in the school bc of scholarships bc they have relatives who are teachers, specially a classmate of mine, who's mom is an old teacher (bonus concern points lol) and who knows if she might get fired...LETS NOT SUMMON EVIL GUYS. but yeah my headmistress and the school council have been very silly lately lol

The Case of the Vanishing Vampire by (Anonymous)
Fandom: Discworld
Pairing/Characters: Reg Shoe, Visit, Vimes, Vetinari, Carrot, Angua, Cheery Littlebottom, William de Worde, Otto von Chriek, Rufus Drumknott, Death, George Pony
Rating: Teen
Words: 19,552

Author's summary: Reg and Visit are drawn into a mystery at the heart of Ankh Morpork's undead community. Why would a lifelong black-ribboner suddenly try to kill his landlady? And why have his ashes mysteriously disappeared? With the rest of the Watch focused on a threat to the new underground rail network, Reg and Visit will need to work together to solve the case, because if the two of them can't manage to put aside their differences, somebody's going to get away with murder...
Author's notes:
Q. Why is this fic like the Ankh-Morpork coat of arms?
A. They were both supported by hippos.
This fic is dedicated to the good people of #Yuletide: Doranwen and Fran who dropped ropes when I fell into my own plotholes, SteelNeko who came up with one of the OCs, Kurushi who agreed to beta-read despite an impossibly tight deadline and TL whose gentle command of "This is never going to be finished on time, you need to start writing an alternate fic NOW" is the only reason I'm not perma-banned from Yuletide.
But most of all it's dedicated to my recipient, who has the patience of the saint and whose prompt basically amounted to "One's an evangelist, the other's a zombie; together THEY FIGHT CRIME!" which is clearly the most awesome prompt in the history of Yuletide.
Author's warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Additional tags: Complete, Action/Adventure, Bechdel Test Pass, Blood, Canon Compliant, Case Fic, Crimes, Drama, Friendship, Gen Fic, Gift Fic, Humor, Minor Canonical Character(s), Mystery, Mystery Stories, Past Tense, Photography, Police, Politics, Post-Canon, Prompt Fic, Religions, Teamwork, They Fight Crime!, Trains, Yuletide, Vampires, Whodunnit, Zombies, #Yulechat Challenge 2010

My comment: (Chapter 5) "I don't suppose the dwarf symbol for "mine" resembles a circle with a horizontal line through it, by any chance?"
(Chapter 8) "Kinda love that Visit now basically has one of those things you get by laying a penny on a railroad track. (Don't do this, kids.)"
Quote:
'We're in the middle of a heatwave and Detritus has never been particularly swayed by debate even when his brain's at a reasonable temperature.'
'Yes, but we can't just walk away.'
'No.'
'Oh.'
'Yeah.'
'Stoneface is going to go absolutely Bursar.'
'Well, if you want to let a murderer get away because you were afraid of getting in trouble.'
'Oh shut up.'
'No, you shut up.'
'No, you shut up.'
The two corporals turned to Detritus and smiled.
"Fair enough, Sarge. Can you just move to one side for a minute so we can turn the cart around?"

So we went to the vet on Wednesday to discuss Jasper's whole health with our primary vet. We trust him a lot because he's been our vet for 13 plus years now.

Our vet said that with Jasper's kidney disease (early stage 1) he wouldn't recommend going to an oncologist for treatments as both radiation and chemo may put to much strain on our boys kidneys.

He sent an email to our optometrist who did Jasper's surgery about the risks of going in again to try and remove the additional melanoma cells. And got back to us that day recommending the surgery to hopefully be able to remove the additional melanoma.

Apparently diffuse iris melanoma doesn't grow back often and it's risk of moving elsewhere is also low.

So next Thursday, Jasper goes back in for surgery.

Hopefully they can save him.

I want to have hope. I'm never ready to say goodbye to my cats. And I want Jasper to live as long as he can. To beat kidney disease and Cancer for as long as possible.

At the vet's office I also got to meet a five week old kitten, that our vet rescued! Omg she was the tiniest little thing.

Jasper than bit me in jealousy! I have my hands full with Jasper, Boo, Bitsy and Nori though!

Somehow our house looks more chaotic and full of half-filled bags and boxes as we prepare for a week long vacation to the northwoods. ONE WEEK! You'd think we were packing to move out!

The thing about the place we're headed is that the closest town with a grocery store is twenty minutes down the Gunflint Trail. I mean, I will drive twenty minutes to a store around here. Maybe because we're surrounded by TREES, twenty minutes away feels so much further when we're up north. Half of what we're bringing is food. Almost none of which will be returning with us.

Despite all this, I'm really looking forwrard to the vacation. There is limited wireless, but I usually get up early and make the hike to the Lodge with my computer and spend an hour or so making sure I'm not missing out on any earth-shattering news. So, I'm still reachable, just... only once a day. I'm going to try to post pictures and such--you know, actually keep up with this blog for once!

ooooooookay so

loooooong time ago I did a lot of work on a CSS overlay for Dreamwidth’s Neutral Good/Evil styles to make them work properly on mobile devices as well as Desktop. If you apply the CSS as Custom CSS to your journal, it keeps working on desktop and starts working right on mobile. All the nightmare noise from Dreamwidth’s old mobile-ish style went away, it got way more information dense, and most of all

no

goddamn

horizontal

scrolling

ever.

Not even with the navbar turned on. It’s stupidly tall, but it no longer scrolls.

(That was some work.)

I handed off that code to Dreamwidth ages ago, but they’ve got a tiny staff and I don’t know how important it ever was to them or even how much made it into the codebase.

Turns out tho’… seems people are still using mine? And I just got an issue report. And I have an edit that fixes it on my machine. And I fixed a subject line issue while I was at it.

sooooo uhhhhhhhh

I guess I’m dropping a new release!

Anybody want to test Version 0.85 before I make it official?

Been a while since I bookblogged here, huh? This isn't EVERYTHING, but this post already took me fucking hours to type up, so, let's get into it—

Jhereg by Steven Brust
Mickey7 by Ashton Edward

Both of these books were romps, though the former is the more compelling overall package.

Jhereg )

Mickey7 )

That All Shall Be Saved: Heaven, Hell, and Universal Salvation by David Bentley Hart (DNF, 48%)
Honest to God by John A.T. Robinson (DNF, 54%)
Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thích Nhất Hạnh (DNF, 24%)
Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church by N.T. Wright

Look, to tip my hand, I'm in the (very!) early phase of writing a weird fantasy/historical/pastiche-y novel that dares to ask questions like "damn what was it like to be The Greatest Haterliest Poaster Of All Time" and also "what if Martin Luther was a chick" and "what if Martin Luther was two people instead of one" and "what if those people kissed failed to kiss" and "what if Martin Luther were a radical pacifist on top of all the other crazy shit he was doing" and "what if sacred music was actually efficacious and had geopolitical implications" and so on. I blame Lyndal Roper specifically for presenting a portrait of Martin Luther so vivid and intriguing that I could not help but go patently insane over him thereafter.

The logical next step for researching such a novel would be to read up on the theology and history of that period, because even if I'm VERY heavy on the pastiche aspects, it's nice to understand the historical context and some contemporaneous sources/writings for the period of history I'm interested in, if only for riffing purposes, yaknow.

Alas, however, I'm a magpie with no self-control, and thus easily beguiled by Every Other Book I Trip Over On The Way To The Stuff I Should Actually Be Reading, which is how I wound up with this grab-bag of rather more contemporary theology.

All of which I am entirely unqualified to properly evaluate, to be clear, as someone who's variously identified as "Southern Baptist," "Christian agnostic," "deist," "Quaker," "neopagan," "animist," and "some weird woo bullshit syncretic thing ig, sorry it's cringe I know" at various points in my life. But that sure won't stop me from prattling about 'em on my blog.

That All Shall Be Saved )

Honest to God )

Living Buddha, Living Christ )

Surprised By Hope )

Aside: all of these books felt pretty repetitive. Something to do with the genre, I guess? No way to theology-y people to feel like they've gotten your point across without restating it three different ways? IDK.

ANYWAY. I should probably quit dicking around with these books for a bit, since, y'know, novel. I gotta read more Martin Luther himself and also probably some John Calvin. (Alas this means my copy of Kosuke Koyama's Five Mile an Hour God will likely remain mostly-unread on my shelf. Did I mention I'm a magpie. Books pile up in my home whenever I get on a weird pseudo-reasearch-y kick, and I am blessed with an indulgent partner who just keeps buying me more bookshelves instead of telling me to cut it the hell out, which is very sweet of him, but also I could really use someone to stop me before I commit more Irresponsible Spending Crimes... though I saw someone the other day comparing book-buying to wine-buying, e.g. hey it's valid and normal to let some of them age in the cellar & have more than you'll be able to drink; you want to have good wine when the time is right! and UNFORTUNATELY this is very effective for allowing me to continue in my profligate ways. RIP me.)

...okay yeah I couldn't find any way to fit Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik into all of this. Spinning Silver was very good, but I don't have much to say! The primary romance was a total nothingburger, but that's fine because mostly the book is about Miryem girlbossing her way through Rumpelstiltskin and that shit totally rules. I would like to read several more books about moneylenders Being Incredibly Good At Their Job. The book gets a bit bloated and flabbier as it goes along (though the parts with secondary-girlboss Irina and horrible little man Mirnatius can stay; those bits were great) but never enough to knock it down from the "very good" tier. Fairytale retellings aren't normally my thing but this one was solid.

I have had a very interesting few days, writing-wise. I had been noodling on an idea for a while when, maybe three days ago, I started wondering if I might be able to do use the premise of the Hour of the Wolf (my Teen Wolf/MCU timetravel long-lost family story feat. Allison Argent) on something related to Anita Blake.

Note: It took me a whole day to remember had already done that in 2005 with Switchback, a story I didn't import over to AO3 as it's incomplete. (You can find it here; cw: rape)

Sometimes people say they only tell one story… and I just re-read Switchback and realized that I didn't create something new with Hour of the Wolf; I'd taken my one story and applied it to Teen Wolf.

Anyway.

A few days ago, when the idea occurred to me to apply the HotW premise to Anita Blake, I went all in, I was writing, I was plotting, and I had over 6,000 words together by the time I managed to think my way through to the end of the story…. And then I stopped. I realized that I absolutely do not want to write this story as it's set because there's no chance of a hopeful ending. The story starts with irreparable loss, and there's no way to fix that.

So I stopped.

In the interests of transparency (and because I like throwing dark-haired girls and their preternatural sidekicks back in time), I've posted what I have written below the cut:
