Yes, exactly! And the whole notion that straight behavior meant heterosexual/heteroromantic nature, is laughable. Lots of queer people have behaved as straight for a variety of reasons over the years especially at times when any queer behavior was so ruthlessly punished. It didn't make any of them less queer. Oh, and the whole "we can't know what the author intended because they're dead" is a suspect argument as well especially if you subscribe to the "death of the author" literary theory. It doesn't matter what Fitzgerald intended, queer folk see themselves or someone like themselves when they look at Nick. The experience of the reader is a totally valid lense of interpretation of a character it does not need to be the authors.
